Heart opening can be a vulnerable practice, both physically and emotionally, but our backbends can also be pathways to joy and playfulness as they help to curate a deeper connection to the Self and those around us. Our fourth chakra, Anahata, is activated by heart opening and represents the seat of our love, empathy and connection to others.
Join Lauren in exploration of this powerful practice through the understanding of proper alignment and anatomy so you can backbend with a strong physical and mental foundation.
We will have a short lecture on Anahata (Heart) Chakra, the physical and energetic shifts that take place in the body during heart opening, and include pranayama and meditation as foundations of our practice.
Asana will include a short sequence to warm the body before moving into our deeper backbends with options for modifications and advanced variations with the assistance of props.
We will cover 5 common backbends with time for curious exploration and questions:
Upward Facing Dog (Urdhva Mukha Savasana)
Wild Thing/Flip Dog (Cametkatasana)
Floor Bow (Dhanurasana)
Dancer’s Pose/Mermaid variation/King Dancer’s (Nataranjasana)
Wheel (Urdhva Dhanurasana)
Backbending transition- Wild Thing to Wheel
