10 Things You Need to Know About Yoga in San Diego

March 4, 2019 Honey Yoga -

Honey Yoga is proud to call America’s Finest City its home and be part of the community of yoga in San Diego. Sure, we could probably live without the flakey surfer dudes who wear flip-flops and board shorts on the first date and still have the nerve not to call you for a second date. Or the Gaslamp on a Saturday night during Spring Break. Or the Gaslamp ever. Or the 805 at 5 pm. Or the fact that the entire city always sells out of Air Conditioners after the first above-80-degree-day of Summer (like....just stock more?).

But there are three undeniable, universally-agreed-upon things that make SD truly fine: the sun, the fish burritos, and the yoga.

We love that San Diego is a place where yogis of all levels can dive in for the first time, learn new types of yoga, and deepen their practice with one of the many trainings and workshops available.

Whether you're a total newbie who's just a little yoga-curious or someone whose entire sense of self and well-being depends on their time on the mat, this is the San Diego yoga guide for you.

#1: You Don’t Need to Be a Yogi to Practice

We love yoga, but firm believers that there's no one way to be a good yogi. That’s one reason why we love yoga in San Diego. There are so many ways for you to practice, even if it just means lying on a mat with a lavender eye pillow over your face for an hour in the studio with us. Quite frankly, we want to see even more bad-yogis, non-yogis and don’t-give-a-shit yogis practicing at Honey and all around San Diego.

If you’re ready to move your bad-yogi bod, get signed up for 3 Weeks for $33 with Honey and show us the best of your worst—we’re ready for you.

#2: There are Tons of Workshops

If you’re curious about a specific aspect of yoga, want to dive into meditation or just get more time on the mat, get yourself to a workshop. We recently held a beginner yogi workshop and, our fave, 108 salutations workshop on Turkey Day.

Check our workshops schedule often to see what’s happening in the Honey Studio so you can deepen your practice to the tune of our lovely voices. BTW, If you’re on our email list, you’ll know about our workshops before the yogis who aren’t—so get signed up.

If none of our events tickle your fancy right now, check out one of these incredible studios that also offer workshops in San Diego:

  • Gather Encinitas, Encinitas

  • Yoga Bound, Carlsbad

  • The House of Yogi, Point Loma

  • Spirit Yoga, Pacific Beach

#3: You Can Practice Outside, Year-Round

Whether you're busting it out with a billion handstands and chatarungas, or you've got more of a 50-percent-child's-pose kind of practice, you can pair your yoga with San Diego vistas all over town. There's plenty of yoga to be had while enjoying the best weather in the world.

We’re on the Boulevard, where outdoor yoga can get a little...fume-y..., so if you’re looking to get your zen on with an ocean breeze blowing by, here are a few options to check out:

  • Yoga on the Beach, Hotel Del Coronado

  • Yoga at Balboa Park with Live Music

  • Yoga Jawn Sunset Cliffs Yoga

  • Bliss Paddle Yoga

P.S. We haven't checked all of these out for ourselves, so let us know what you think!

P.P.S. Don't get us wrong–there's plenty of breeze and sunshine to be had at Honey. And seriously, if you time your class right, you can catch one of the best sunsets in town.

#4: Acro Yoga is Totally a Thing

We celebrate yoga in all forms, and yoga-ing with a partner is just another cool way to advance your practice in San Diego. If you want to give it a try, check out the San Diego Acro Yoga Meetup, in Ocean Beach—it’s free! Plus, it’s on the oceanfront; gorgeous views and cool moves make us excited too!

And while acro-yoga can be a totally platonic activity, at Honey Yoga we always say, 'Couples who practice yoga together, stay together.' And maybe it's double if you're flipping each other upside down by the feet on the beach!"

#5: You Can Get a New View With Aerial Yoga

If you want to get your “om” on while hanging upside down, San Diego has you covered with Aerial Yoga, which is practiced from a suspended sling-like hammock. This allows you to try more challenging forms of poses and look totally epic at the same time. If you love to test yourself with advanced yoga, check out Trilogy Sanctuary, just blocks from the beach in La Jolla.

P. S. If you're more of a go-with-gravity kinda person, try our Honey Hi-Lo class for some serious grounding. Bust a move and maybe even break a little sweat, then chill out for the last part of class for some long, slow stretches.

P.P.S. As with all classes in our studio, Hi-Lo is still open to allllll levels!

#6: Families are Welcome

There’s something about those golden San Diego sunsets that get people bumping uglies. So naturally, San Diego is a family-friendly yoga city, with classes for babies, kids, mamas and papas alike.

We happily welcome older kids (preteens to teens) to practice at Honey with adult permission. If your little ones are still, err, little, we also host family yoga and movie nights—a perfect way to spend your evening together.

Follow us on Facebook, @HoneyLovesYoga, to get announcements for upcoming family nights so your yogi-brood doesn’t miss a chance to move, relax and unwind!

🎃Family Yoga Night🎃 * 10/27 4pm * Back by popular demand, we're doing it again, this time Halloween style! Expect yoga for the whole fam, Halloween snacks and drinks, and a not-so-scary movie for the kiddos! 👻👻👻

#7: Yoga Studios in San Diego Are Communities

If you’re looking to join a community of like-minded individuals in America’s Finest City, a new yoga studio may be just what you need. Yoga in San Diego is all about community—and if you find a studio you love, you’ll start to see many of the same faces in class.

A supportive and friendly community is something we are constantly looking to build at Honey as well. In fact, we founded Honey because we love our community and believe yoga is the best way to serve it. Our dream was to create a middle space. A clean, neutral and safe studio for anyone and everyone to practice yoga, where what you wear doesn't matter (pajamas are yoga pants too), and quite frankly, what you like to wear doesn't matter. We not only want to be an asset to our community, but we want to always encourage that feeling of community within the studio itself.

#8: Every Body is a Yoga Body at Honey San Diego

Got a body? Great! Yoga's for you! At Honey, we don't care what you wear or what you look like. Whatever bod you're rockin', whatever wardrobe you've got, whatever karma, baggage, or bullshit you're carrying around–we're here for it. We’ve got plenty of our own to match.

Happiest happy Thanksgiving from these happy Honeys who did 108 Sun Salutations this morning!!!! We are very thankful for all of them and all of you. XO, Bridget & Olivia & crew.

#9: You Can Get Your Fill of Local Yoga, Without Going to a Class

Not ready to step on the mat, but want to hear a little more of what we're about? Check out our podcast, Don’t Listen to Me! You can stream it or download it here on our website or you can find it on iTunes. We talk yoga, relationships, the Universe, and all things we think might help us be the best, happiest, healthiest bad yogis we can be.

We've also recently introduced an advice segment to the pod. Fill out this form (you can use a fake name to keep yourself anonymous if you want!) and we'll tackle your Qs as best we can–even if that means we need to call in some actual experts.

Oh yeah, and you can follow along with our antics on Instagram too! @DontListentoMe_Podcast.

#10: You Can Fall in Love With Your Practice in Paradise

If you’re ready to fall in love with your yoga practice, this is the place to do it. Whether you’re resting in child’s pose with us on the Boulevard or doing your fave headstand on an ocean bluff, you’ll fall in love with San Diego and yoga at the same time. Be sure to stop at Honey one of these sunny days—and if you’ve never come to see us before, we offer your first 30 days for just $30.

We hope to see you around soon!
